About This Coffee

From the heart of Kenya's most celebrated coffee region, Nyeri County, comes this vibrant AA lot from the Muthuthiini Factory. Nyeri's reputation for producing some of the world's most complex and structured coffees is unmatched, thanks to its prime location nestled between the majestic Mount Kenya and the Aberdare mountain ranges.

This picturesque area east of the Great Rift Valley provides the perfect terroir for exceptional coffee. The combination of rich, deep red volcanic soil, consistent and ample rainfall, and moderate temperatures encourages the coffee cherry to mature slowly, concentrating the remarkable acidity and signature blackcurrant notes that distinguish Kenyan coffee. Producers in this region, dedicated to quality, embrace a commitment to environmental care, hand-picking only the ripest cherries across two distinct harvests—the main crop from October to March, and the earlier "fly crop."

Processing Excellence

The Kenyan washed process is world-renowned for its precision and is a key factor in achieving the characteristic clarity and intense flavor profile of this coffee. At the wet mill (or 'Factory' as they are known in Kenya), the focus is on a rigorous process that brings out the clean fruit, sharp acidity, and sugary sweetness.

Processing Details:

  • Selection: Only ripe, red cherries are delivered to the Factory.

  • Pulping: Cherries are pulped, and the coffee is then subjected to a rigorous fermentation and washing protocol.

  • Fermentation: Following wet fermentation (typically overnight), the coffee is fully washed to remove all mucilage.

  • Soaking: The beans are often subjected to a secondary stage of soaking in clean water, a crucial step unique to the Kenyan process that contributes to flavor clarity.

  • Drying: The parchment coffee is sun-dried slowly on raised African beds, where it is frequently turned until the optimal moisture level is reached.

This meticulous, multi-stage washing and soaking process is what defines the brilliant profile of Muthuthiini AA, making it a powerful and remarkably clean cup.
