About This Coffee

Bette Buna, which translates to 'House of Coffee,' is far more than a producer; it is a community-focused company deeply rooted in the village of Taferi Kela in Sidamo, Ethiopia. Founded by Dawit and Hester, who took over the responsibility from Grandfather Syoum and Grandmother Emame, the company is dedicated to uplifting a region that has historically been overlooked by the wider industry.

The Bette Buna model is focused on building sustainable opportunities. They distribute over 350,000 climate-adapted seedlings annually, generating a massive economic impact for local farmers. Furthermore, they are a rare equal opportunity employer in the region, providing meaningful work for marginalized groups, including people with disabilities, single mothers, and war veterans like Sissay, who helps lead the processing team. This commitment is paired with an exceptionally transparent, EUDR-compliant supply chain that ensures fair wages by mapping every single individual involved in production.

This specific 10-bag microlot showcases their innovative 'Kickstart' natural process. Ripe cherries are briefly placed in an anaerobic environment—a short 'kick' that restructures and concentrates the natural sugars without initiating full fermentation. The coffee is then traditionally dried on raised African beds, rested for a minimum of eight weeks to develop complexity, and meticulously sorted.
